If you own a home in Westchester, you’re living in one of the most established residential neighborhoods on the Westside of Los Angeles. Most homes here were built between the late 1940s and 1960s during the post-war housing boom, and while the houses have held up beautifully, the sewer laterals running underneath them have not always aged as well.
A sewer lateral is the pipe that connects your home’s plumbing to the city’s main sewer line, typically running 30 to 60 feet under your front yard and out to the street. In Westchester, these are frequently original clay or cast iron pipes — materials that were standard at the time but have a usable lifespan of roughly 50 to 75 years. If the math on that timeline doesn’t look great, you’re right.
How Do You Know Your Sewer Line Is Failing?
Most homeowners don’t think about their sewer line until something goes visibly wrong. Here are the signs we see most often when we arrive at a Westchester home for a sewer camera inspection:
Recurring drain backups even after professional cleaning. Foul odor outside your home, especially near the sewer cleanout. Patches of grass in the front yard that are suspiciously greener or softer than the rest (we covered why that happens here). Sinkholes or dips forming in the lawn along the path of the sewer lateral.
These signs point to a pipe that has cracked, separated at a joint, or partially collapsed. Tree roots from the mature street trees that line many Westchester blocks will exploit even a small opening.
Repair vs. Replacement — and the Trenchless Option
Not every damaged sewer line needs full replacement. If the damage is localized — say, a single section where roots have cracked a joint — pipelining can create a new pipe-within-a-pipe without digging up your driveway, lawn, or landscaping. It’s a faster repair, usually completed in a day, and it’s significantly less disruptive than traditional excavation.
When the damage is more extensive — a belly in the line, multiple collapsed sections, or complete deterioration — full sewer line repair or replacement is the right call. Even in those cases, trenchless methods like pipe bursting can often get the job done with minimal surface disruption.
The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering requires permits for sewer lateral work, and any contractor performing the repair must be properly licensed. We handle the permitting and inspections as part of our service.
